What we collect

Only what we need to get you sailing

How we use it

Three things, and that's it

1. Track your progress

Your email is how our site recognizes you. It saves which lessons you've finished, so you can start on your phone and pick up where you left off on your computer. When you sail with one of our coaches, they record the skills they see you demonstrate, with the date and their name, so you can see your progress and know what you're ready for next.

2. Check your membership

Some activities are for club members. To know whether they're open to you, we check your email against Commodore Decatur Yacht Club's member list and see whether your membership is active. We only see your membership status, never your payment details. Family members who link their email to a member's membership share that member's status.

3. Invite you to sail with us

Our coaches and volunteers use your contact information to invite you to free rides, Sea Leg Saturdays, Crew Days and other club sailing, to confirm the sails you sign up for, and to answer your messages.

Your cell phone

We sometimes ask for your cell phone so we can confirm rides and let you know about last-minute cancellations due to weather. We'll only send automated text messages from our system if you checked the opt-in box when you entered your cell phone.

Your choice

Opt out anytime, no questions asked

Every invitation our system sends by email or automated text gives you an easy way to opt out. If you change your mind, just use that link, reply "stop" to an automated text, or send us a message below, and we'll stop, no questions asked. If a coach reaches out to you personally, just let them know. You can also ask us to delete your information entirely.

Our weekly Let's Go Sailing email (early Sunday mornings) lists the coming week's activities that fit you. Choose which activities it covers, or turn it off, on the Email preferences page. Its Progress Report names people who joined, finished a course or earned skills by first name and last initial only.

Not ready to commit? Use our demo email

We get it. Handing your email to a website on the first date feels a little forward. If you'd rather keep things casual, type demo@saildecatur.org. It isn't a real inbox (nobody reads it, not even Bob), but it unlocks every course and lets you poke around all the sign-up links to see how everything works.

Think of demo mode as sailing without a logbook. Your progress stays only on that device, nothing reaches the club, and you can't actually sign up for a sail. And because every email gets its own logbook, switching emails starts you over from scratch. So if a demo lesson or two wins you over (it happens), switch to your real email sooner rather than later and save yourself the re-do.

Who sees it

It stays with the club

Your information is kept in the club's private Google account and is seen only by the coaches and volunteers who run these programs. We never sell it or share it with anyone outside Clinton Marina Sailing Club and Commodore Decatur Yacht Club, except the one thing below, and only if you say yes.

Your course progress on other sites, if you choose. The same free courses are offered by other sailing clubs powered by ClubBuilder and by Sailboat Instructor. If you tick Use my course progress on other ClubBuilder and Sailboat Instructor sites (or say yes when we find lessons you finished on another of those sites), the lessons you've finished are kept in a shared record under your email, so they count on all of them. Only finished lessons are shared: never your phone, sign-ups, membership, skills or coach notes.

There's no password. If you use a shared computer or tablet, tap Not you? Switch email at the top of the course pages when you're done.
